QADIR – Nick Hakim
Some songs just transport you to a special place where you can just feel something truly unique to that song. QADIR does that better than any other song for me. I’d actually say it’s my probably favourite song at the moment. Nick Hakim has an incredible feel, I’ve learned a lot from listening to him play.

This Must Be The Place – Talking Heads
Some of the best lyrics ever written in this writer’s opinion. David Byrne’s stream of consciousness lyrical style perfectly captures the essence of the music, which I think is the best kind of lyrical writing. This is a perfect example of that kind of writing to look to.

Bodysnatchers – Radiohead
Radiohead & their album In Rainbows have been massively influential to me as an artist. The whole approach to each song being individual, and songs being structured in a way that takes you on a musical journey are what I really love especially about the album. One track that stands out for this reason is Bodysnatchers – the way it unfolds and develops is so fluid. Truly great songwriting.

Walkin’ – Thundercat
This is such a beautifully simple yet unique song. The harmonies are so weird, funky and chill. It was one of the first songs of Thundercat’s I came across, and he’s been a huge inspiration ever since.

Love Is Only a Feeling – HOMESHAKE
A true modern classic in my opinion. It’s got such a beautiful and strong atmosphere, it’s almost cinematic. I find it so inspiring as it’s such a DIY song to it’s core, and captures something completely magical in it’s production.

No Shade In The Shadow Of The Cross – Sufjan Stevens
Sufjan Stevens is such an inspiring artist to me as he’s one of those artists that changes direction with almost every project, whilst still holding his own unique style. No Shade In The Shadow Of The Cross is one of my favourites as the lyrical writing is so clever, I’m a sucker for a great metaphor, and this track is rife with them.

Hunnybee – Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Such a killer melody, with beautifully subtle touch instrumentally. It’s such a carefree song, that’s just fun to listen to. Ruban Nielson is a great artist and producer who has a real multi-instrumentalist who has been inspiring to me in his DIY approach.

FEEL. – Kendrick Lamar
I love the simplicity of this track instrumentally, combined with the complexity of the lyrics. It’s a great blend of old school and new school hip hop. Kendrick Lamar has had a large influence on my lyrics. This track is incredibly honest and open, which I find very inspiring.

Lonely Lover – Xenia Rubinos
Xenia Rubinos is such an exciting artist with the ability to take sounds from so many different styles. She has a great approach to rhythm, and also has tremendous lyrical ability, as she shows in ‘Lonely Lover’. It’s been an inspiring song to me in just the fact that she’s really doing something super different.

Things – Louis Cole
There isn’t anybody else in the world like Louis Cole. His music is unbelievably insane, in that it can be completely crazy and ridiculous, but he also has the ability to make incredibly simple and delicate songs such as ‘Things’ – which is the sign of a truly great artist in my opinion. Another DIY, godlike multi-instrumentalist, he’s an incredible guy.
